Fat Freddy's Cat is one of a handful of local original rock recording bands. The band began as a group of session musicians for songwriter/guitarist Steve Harris, playing backing tracks for him on his personal recording efforts. Steve developed cancer and passed away, prior to the completion of his second recording effort. The band finished the recording and a subsequent CD in 2000, using unfinished tracks and new original songs from the various members. They performed live for several years as "the Steve Harris Band" in his memory. Another CD was released in 2002 under that name. Several amicable personel changes were made, as the members found they had a number of different musical directions to pursue. As a result, the basis of the current line-up decided on a name change to reflect that new direction. The name, Fat Freddy's Cat, comes from a rather obscure cartoon character, created by Gilbert Shelton. Recording work continued, with new releases in 2009 and 2010.
